WOODEN SHJIPS LP

WOODEN SHJIPS - BACK TO LAND LP (Thrill Jockey)
Wooden Shjips from the US westcoast are probably the best current reincarnation of late-60s psychedelia and 70s progressive rock. In contrast to their previous works "Back To Land" is characterized by a more harmonized, poppier sound and a sunny feel. Also the use of an accoustic-guitar opens up the possibility for a slightly different sound spectrum.  Nevertheless, the songs on their fourth album are based on their typical signature style made with compelling organ lines, the wash of distorted guitar, a highly motorik rhythm section and discreet vocals drifting in and out of each track. Wooden Shjips keep their songs simple. The use of repetition as a hypnotic effect is one of their main secrets. The musical arrangments are repeated like they were soon leading into a musical nirvana. These mantras are only enhanced by some really brilliant progressive guitar-licks. The eight songs fuse influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Velvet Underground, Snapper, Spaceman 3, Neu!, The Doors, Can and Neil Young, but in the end it's Wooden Shjips own unmistakable brand of psychedelic rock.
